Subreddits Protest: More than 6,000 subreddits went dark on Tuesday to protest upcoming changes to Reddit’s API pricing. The changes, which will go into effect on July 1, will significantly increase the cost of using the API for commercial purposes.

The protest was organized by the subreddit r/APIs, which has over 100,000 subscribers. In a post on the subreddit, the moderators wrote that the new pricing would “make it impossible for many developers to continue using Reddit’s API.”

“We believe that these changes are unfair to developers and will stifle innovation on Reddit,” the moderators wrote. “We urge Reddit to reconsider these changes.”

Subreddits Protest

Reddit has defended the new pricing, saying that it is necessary to “ensure that the API is sustainable for the long term.” The company has also said that it is working on a “developer rebate program” that will help offset the cost of the new pricing for some developers.

However, the protest has drawn widespread support from the Reddit community. In the hours since the protest began, thousands of users have posted messages of support on r/APIs.

“This is a huge blow to the Reddit community,” wrote one user. “I hope Reddit reconsiders these changes.”

“I’m a developer who uses Reddit’s API for my work,” wrote another user. “These changes will make it much harder for me to do my job.”

It remains to be seen whether Reddit will reverse course on the new pricing. However, the protest has shown that the Reddit community is deeply concerned about the changes.
