GAL hidden groups are typically used to hide a group from the address list in Outlook and Exchange, but this can also make it difficult to add teams to the group. In this article, we will explore the steps necessary to add teams to a GAL hidden 365 group, as well as some frequently asked questions and answers.

The first step in adding teams to a GAL hidden 365 group is to ensure that you have the necessary permissions. In order to add teams to a GAL hidden group, you must be a member of the group and have the “Add” permission. If you do not have the necessary permissions, you will need to contact the group owner or an administrator to request access.

Once you have the necessary permissions, the next step is to access the group in the Microsoft 365 admin center. To do this, log in to the admin center and navigate to the “Groups” section. From there, select the group that you want to add teams to and click on the “Edit” button.

In the “Edit” menu, you will see an option to “Add teams”. Select this option and then select the team that you want to add to the group. Once you have selected the team, click on the “Save” button to complete the process.

It’s important to note that if you want to remove the team from the GAL hidden group, you’ll need to follow the same steps, but this time you’ll select “Remove” instead of “Add”

Resolution:

We were able to repro the issue, confirmed that the option to migrate the group into a team becomes unavailable in the user interface due to the parameter –HiddenGroupMembershipEnabled, based on this behavior we have confirmed that the application is working as designed.

We have removed the parameter and created a new group via PowerShell, thus We were able to migrate the group into a team, the reason behind this behavior is that Teams application is not able to validate whether you are the owner or not, as is hiding all this information in the backend.

Workaround

1.First we need to go to Azure AD https://aad.portal.azure.com  and get the Object ID for the hidden group that was created. Azure Active Directory > Groups > Search and select the target group.

2.Connect to TEAMS PowerShell, sign in with the Office 365 credentials of the owner of the group that was created.

3.Enter the command below

New-Team -Group < Object ID from step 1>

The new team will take some time to appear on the application, once the sync cycle is done will appear there. We need to sign out and sign in back.
