Amravati, Maharashtra: In a shocking medical case, doctors in Maharashtra’s Amravati city have surgically removed a massive half-kilogram hairball from the stomach of a 10-year-old girl. The girl was brought to a private hospital after suffering from vomiting, loss of appetite, and weight loss for the past five to six months.During a medical examination and counseling session, the young girl confessed to a habit of eating her own hair. This led the doctors to suspect the cause of her digestive problems. A subsequent examination confirmed their fears, revealing a large mass of hair tangled up into a ball inside her stomach.Dr. Usha Gajbhiye, the pediatric surgeon who led the operation, told reporters that the surgery was successful and the entire hairball was removed. “We decided to operate upon her, and during the surgery conducted a few days back, about half a kilogram of hairball was found in her stomach,” she said.The girl is now recovering well and is able to eat properly without any issues. She is expected to be discharged from the hospital soon. This rare condition, where a person compulsively eats hair, is known as trichophagia, and when the hair forms a ball in the stomach, it’s often referred to as a trichobezoar. In some cases, it can even lead to a more serious condition called Rapunzel Syndrome, where the hairball extends into the small intestine.
